Homework tonight!

Attendance at the speaker event tonight at 7pm!

Write down three questions to ask the speaker when she visits our class tomorrow. If you have a question during the talk tonight, I encourage you to ask it at the end of the speaker’s talk!

Read the bioethics microbicide paper you were assigned. Half the class will read the paper How informed is consent in vulnerable populations? or if you didn’t receive the paper, you are assigned to read Microbicide research in developing countries: have we given the ethical concerns due consideration? from your binder under the bioethics section! We are going to do a debate.  For tomorrow, I’d like you to write a paragraph discussing the ethics that are mentioned in your paper, whether informed consent for studies, the use of specific populations of people for studies, the location where studies are conducted etc. Prepare three points that support and three points that argue against the issue.

Today we learnt how to search and find a scientific article using the great resources we have at Bard. I’d like you to find a scientific paper that relates to the environmental isolates and/or antibiotic resistance lab and write a few sentences about why you chose that paper.

Remember that for all your writing assignments, if you use other people’s ideas from the texts you are reading, you should be crediting them for their ideas. You should only ever turn in work that is your own.

Thank you for your hypotheses today. We will review and discuss them as a class. They will be edited so they are the best they can be for your proposals.

Also, thank you for your tweets! I appreciate your participation and in providing very insightful tweets! Please keep it up!

  1. We must never forget how informed consent is an important part of biological ethics, especially within our society today within research and healthcare. It makes people aware of the medical practice and enriches ability of workers to understand the patient as an individual rather than a subject. They must follow an ethical code where problems are clarified and restricted in health care for improvement of work. It is, by definition, the study of philosophy in the sciences.
